Winter is getting on board, and now is when the sweaters come out, the woodpile is stacked ready and waiting, and the soup is on the stove. November 15 2024If you haven't made soup on a woodstove, and your home is heated with wood, you're in for a treat.I start mine in the morning, after the stove is going good and is hot, then cook it for a half an hour in the pressure cooker, or a bit longer if it's a regular pan, then take it off and let it cool. The flavors develop, and when it's reheated for dinner, it's a completely different animal. See more about cooking on a wood stove to find out how I do it. There are complex recipes for soup, then there are easy ones. Mine are the latter. I often use up whatever is in the fridge, with some sort of end in mind. I usually plan my meals so that the soup is the final use of any leftovers. With winter under way, there are lots of chores that you can get to now, that probably got left while there was so much going on in the garden. These would be things like sorting out your seeds, and other supplies for starting them, washing pots and trays so they're ready to go at a moments notice. You may also be writing down your
spring garden planning
, even if it's just a scribble on the back of the grocery receipt. Those ideas that you write down are where your brain goes in the middle of the night.
